This week is Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week, a good time for us to pause and take stock on the inspiration and motivation our volunteer role models have shared with young people through Inspiring the Future events.

Principals, teachers and career coordinators from four schools across New Zealand give insight into how Inspiring the Future opened students' minds to all jobs that are out there, and helped challenge their internal biases. For example, students at Waitakaruru School thought a 25-year-old Māori loan partner was a model based on what they saw in front of them.

Inspiring the Future hit the mark in Ashburton last week, where 27 young people got to talk to 10 local volunteers about their jobs, as well as the mayor and deputy mayor.

A recent Inspiring the Future event in Christchurch focused on 16–24 year-olds who are not in education, employment or training. We held the event at Tūranga, Christchurch City Libraries, in collaboration with Connected NZ and Te Tahi Youth.

Over 200 Year 9 ākonga recently got inspired about careers at an Inspiring the Future event at Hillmorton High School in Christchurch. The role models came from a range of career pathways related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Earlier this year, we teamed up with Porirua City Council (PCC) and three schools to connect career role models with ākonga in Porirua. Corinna School, Plimmerton School and Postgate School each ran an Inspiring the Future event in May with local volunteer role models, including the Mayor of Porirua City, Anita Baker.

Go with Tourism and their eight tourism and hospitality role models inspired rangatahi at a full-day ‘career famil’ last week. Rangatahi got tours of the Crowne Plaza Auckland, saw staff carry out daily tasks, and heard how a hotel works behind the scenes. The event took inspiration from the ‘familiarisation tours’ – AKA ‘famils’ – often run in tourism.

Wellington City Council school holiday programmes helped young people get inspired about their future, with Inspiring the Future events held in the school holidays for the first time.
